Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and also the most diverse offering mountains, volcanoes, deserts and forests as well as national parks, superb beaches and great nightlife. Most of the tourist resorts are located to the south of the island including Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos, Puerto de la Cruz and Costa Adeje. Alternatively, the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the beautiful city of La Oratava and the World Heritage city of La Laguna can all be found to the north of the island which has a more temperate climate than the drier and warmer south. Splitting the two sides stands the highest mountain in Spain, El Teide, at 12,198 ft.

Tenerife Reina Sofia Airport is located on the south coast of the island. Buses are cheap, frequent and comfortable and run to all the main tourist destinations as well as the capital. Taxis cost approx 20 euros to Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos.
